A Hundred Years From Now

2025 (pending) • 10 - 12 mins • mixed media animation, sound

*current research - creation in progress

This project captures how reconnecting with my Bengali identity informs a cultivation of the memories of my late mother. Through an exploration and celebration of Bengali cinema, poetry and literature, I trace the roots of my heritage and uncover my cultural identity, and in the process discover aspects about my parent’s upbringing in my native home of Bangladesh. This journey of self discovery through cultural works - specifically the works of filmmaker Satyajit Ray and poet Rabindranath Tagore - ultimately brings me to making connections between these works and the memory of my mother.

Arijit Debnath is a Bengali-Canadian filmmaker and animator. In an experimental cinematic practice that involves a tracing of cultural and diasporic identity, he explores how personal, cultural and cinematic memory are intertwined. His current research dwells on the ever shifting nature of diasporic memory across time and space, and how cultural artifacts like cinema, poetry, and literature from one’s native home can form as portals of connection to diasporic identity.
